WEDNESDAY-THURSDAY -- THAI HOMECOOKING

In a tiny shop on E. 9th St., decorated in what can only be described as Thai kitsch, there's a little restaurant that you could easily walk right by without noticing. But that would be a big mistake.

FOOD & BOOZE: FAKE ORCHID
Site/Menu + Map

Our Take: This small, four table spot is as close to Thai homecooking as you're going to get. It's not fancy, but it sure is real. Kind of like you're in a Thai friend's apartment and she's cooking up a classic from home. On our visit, the food was great and the atmosphere was fun with some groups of friends and a couple dates filling the tables. The waitress was extremely helpful, giving us suggestions based on our vague memories of Thai dishes we'd tried in the past.

Recommendations: The menu covers the typical spread from dumplings and Thai soups and salads to the full range of curries, rice and noodle dishes. We liked the steamed dumplings with chicken & shrimp. And we have a soft spot for Thai yellow curry. Our veggie friends absolutely love this place too.

Insider Tip: This is a BYOB spot, so grab some wine or beer on your way in.
(BEER) Stop by the little bodega around the corner on Avenue A @ 10th St. for a better beer selection (and much lower prices) than you'd find in most restaurants.
(WINE) Stop by Discovery Wines right down Ave A @ 2nd St. for a good selection of wines from around the world and a knowledgable staff that will happily suggest something to pair with a Thai dinner.

Details: Open 5-11pm Wed-Mon. Closed Tues. Hours may vary slightly. CASH ONLY.
